Wider World

St. John’s overseas links and away giving is co-ordinated by our World Outreach Committee. We aim to give 10% of our annual income away to other churches and Christian organisations.

Mission partners

  • Lynn Earnshaw leads Vision Tarpuy in Peru, involving a Mobile Bible Institute for teaching and leadership training, community projects and overseeing the leadership of two shanty town churches in Lima.
  • Pauline Curtis works with YWAM in Harpenden. Her role involves pastoral and practical support of YWAM staff from the UK and overseas.
  • The Robles family are in mission training at Redcliffe College. Julio is in the final year of his degree and Caroline has now completed her two year diploma.
  • Dave Bookless is National Director for A Rocha UK, and has a growing national and international role preaching and writing on Creation Care. Dave, Anne and the family joined us on our church weekend away in March 2006 at which Dave shared his vision on environmental issues.

A number of our young people have also spent time working with Christian organisations abroad. In the last year or so this has included:

  • Helen Conacher completed her YWAM Year for God in Tanzania in July 2006.
  • Kirsten Chapman visited Central America in August 2006 with Latin Link undertaking a building project and working directly with the local church.
  • Emma Rust worked at the Rugarama Health Centre in Kabale, Uganda during August 2006.
  • James Salter and Ellie Donaldson spent time in South America and Tanzania with YWAM.

St. John’s Mission Partner Update - Christmas 2007

Much thanks for the way in which the Lord has been blessing Tarpuy and a personal spiritual renewal in my life and ministry. We have largely worked on reorganizing the work both in the area of the church work and the Mobile bible Institute. It is now so much easier to manage and we are more effective and it takes less work than before.

The next major event is the starting of a School for leaders both in Lima in the church in Villa Salvador and in Tarapoto though we aim to start this formally in March of Next year. Also for the next MBI course in February. Please pray for Humberto, Oscar and Nery who will be preparing the material as in adapting the course with the new teaching techniques learnt and applying this to the material, so much prayer is needed for them. My end of the work is preparing the course material for the School for leaders so pray for me in that.

Thanks so much for all the support for me personally and for the work.

I write to you from within a context of YWAM International and YWAM England sensing that we are in a new season. Prophetic words have come from various people within and outside of the mission indicating that a long 'wilderness' time is at an end. Many new initiatives for outreaches are planned for next year. Hope is rising.

Personally, I am grateful for continuing good health to be available here in Harpenden to do various ‘helps’, whether it is driving people to and from airports, debriefing them, cooking for the students or having English conversation partners or anything else that comes along.

Currently I'm asking our leadership if we could designate accommodation for those people returning from the field for short periods and needing a place where they can make ‘home’ temporarily. I have been receiving families, couples and singles coming for various reasons and with varying needs and can see what a HUGE blessing this would be. Please pray for wisdom for me as I write the proposal and for the leaders as they respond.

Much love to all the church family. Thank you so much for praying.

Julio completed his degree in Applied Theology at Redcliffe College in the summer and was pleased with his grade. Caroline, who finished her diploma last year, has enjoyed this past year primarily spending more time with the family but also doing short counselling courses. We are both very grateful for the opportunity to prepare for overseas ministry.

We’re currently seeking God's direction on a placement in South America hopefully next year. In the meantime Julio has a temporary accountancy job until the end of February. Andy (almost 10), Stephanie (8) and Alex (3) are doing well at school and playgroup. Andy continues to enjoy his trumpet lessons. Stephanie has recently joined the choir and sees this as the beginning of a career as a pop-star, Alex has recently had to say goodbye to his friend George who has returned home to Uganda, he is thriving at playgroup.

Thank you for your prayers and support. Please continue to pray for wisdom and the right opportunity for us in South America.

2007 has been an exciting year for A Rocha UK, with new projects at Lewknor in the Chilterns and Steyning on the South Downs and partnerships developing with other Christian mission agencies and land-owners. Our main challenges remain finding people for key posts and finances to be able to take up the many new opportunities.

For Dave it’s been a full, exciting and exhausting year – highlights have included finishing his book Planetwise (to be published in Feb 2008), and taking part in an international A Rocha forum in Kenya. He’s had many speaking engagements and been appointed to the C of E’s Mission & Public Affairs Council, and as Moderator of the Environmental Issues Network of Christians Together in Britain & Ireland.

For Anne it’s been a tough year with a knee injury and unexplained abdominal pain causing many frustrations, especially in preventing Anne continuing with much of her allotment project. It’s also been tough looking after 4 lively kids for the 90+ nights when Dave’s been away speaking.

The kids all keep sprouting – Hannah’s loving yr 8 at Twyford and into Manga and Latin, Rebekah’s in yr 6 at Blair Peach Primary and loves her hamsters, Rosie (yr 4) loves elephants and dance, and Naomi-Ruth (yr2) informs us she’s going to be a ‘mathe-majician’.

At the moment we're doing lots of Christmas assemblies in different schools, getting involved in Christmas events, and teaching some lessons on 'Prejudice'. Recently I have started doing some informal mentoring with some girls in the school which I am really enjoying. I'm also involved in a planning team for a youth event as part of Hope 08 next year which is really exciting. I am still feeling that the work we do here could develop. I’ve been talking with different people and would really appreciate prayer that God gives us His vision for the work we do. I believe that this school year could be a real transition time as the RE dept at the school I'm working in will be changing. It’s a good time for us to restate ourselves as part of the school and the spiritual development of the young people. And please pray that I can keep going with the general day-to-day things and continuing relationships with the young people.

Thank you so much for all your support, I'm really looking forward to coming home for a break over Christmas, catching up with everyone and having lots of sleep!

Uganda

We continue to nurture our link with the Diocese of Kigezi which was first established with our support of a local family Dr. Rachel and Tom Sanderson who worked in Kabale for several years with CMS. We support the Rugarama Health Centre in Kabale with funds being raised in various ways. A number of teams from St. John’s have been to Uganda to see and support the work.

  • Rev. Joshua Owoyesiga and his wife Flavia pioneered the first reciprocal visit from Kabale to Ealing in February 2006.
