St John’s must be one of the few churches in the UK that not only has a tennis club but also its own grass tennis courts, situated in very pleasant surroundings just a few hundred yards from the church – come and have a look sometime!

The club has been in existence for around 90 years and has brought pleasure to members looking to both play the game during the summer months and socialise with others.
We have a wide range of ages and playing abilities and membership is open to anyone locally. The club also has members from other churches in the area and, as part of St. John’s community outreach, we look to draw in members from the neighbourhood.
Fees are kept to a minimum, enough to cover the costs of maintaining our two courts and facilities, with volunteers helping to keep the fees low. We don’t promise a Wimbledon-standard playing surface but considerable effort goes into making the courts enjoyable to play on.
Our season starts in May and finishes at the end of September. During the season, the club arranges informal tennis afternoons, with refreshments, on alternate Sundays during the season and members of all abilities are encouraged to take part. We also have Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles tournaments, with the finals played on one Saturday in July that ends with our annual BBQ. During the early part of the summer there is professional coaching over four evening sessions at a small individual charge.
